Party!!! [<:o)] Sidmouth Carnival
Reply Quote

With press reports that the Sidmouth Carnival is under threat if no-one comes forward to assist with the running and funding - is it perhaps time to consider whether the format of the carnival is suitable in today's environmentally aware world?

Maybe the procession could be held during the day! There would be no need for the thousands of burning light bulbs - no need for each float to tow a generator truck spewing out carbon monoxide and the local shops would be open to attract the crowds after the lorries had passed.

Worth a thought?

Well I know a lot of people think that having a summer carnival would cut down on fuel usages, the whole history of "Carnival" in the westcountry is with lights, Bridgwater used electric on carts "Floats" in the twenty's, we have entered Sidmouth carnival many times as Phoenix Carnival Club and last year 2007 were the South Somerset champions. We recon that the whole of carnival in Devon and Somerset uses the same amount of fuel as one plane to the USA and back not rearly that much in the scale of things. But on the plus side we entered fifteen carnivals and recond our float was seen by two million people (Police estimates) our club has many young members who spend many weeks "January to September" building, painting and getting ready to parade the float. The carnival family is growing in Devon and Somerset and very boyant at the moment. Devon is of course not the begest carnivals but if you had attended Tiverton in the very end of November the number of spectators were the largest of any carnival in Devon this year. We all have and enjoy our hobies.

I don't think a summer carnival had been suggested here. However, keeping the existing carnival dates (Sidmouth/Christmas Carnival) but bringing the time forward to daylight hours - from lunch time to mid-afternoon - would be better. Infact, why not merge a day-time carnival in Sidmouth at Christmas together with the switching on of the Christmas lights and the shopping evening? A colourful procession could take place mid-afternoon with the switching on of the lights during late-afternoon then festivities could continue into the evening alongside the late shopping. The attendance numbers would be amazing.

I agree that the present format is losing favour - a mass of glaring lightbulbs and blaring distorted disco music competing with the roar of generator trucks being towed behind is beginning to go out of fashion and attract a few frowns.
