I bet it blows a hooly when Smits start getting the Sheerlegs on scene in preparation for lifting the stern section. The weather has been quite favourable during the past 3 or so weeks but not a sign of activity at the wreck site. Apart from a BBQ on the stern of the support vessel Terramare! I just wonder why the Lifeboat boys didn't call her up on the VHF to check on the situation before dashing out to effect a "rescue"!      Report

The latest chinese whisper is that the stern section is too heavy to lift and the preferred option is to break her up in situ! Wonder if they'll hang some Christmas lights on her - should look good - as long as the lifeboat boys don't attempt a "rescue".      Report

20/10/2007, 9:30 AM Seadog Joined on 05/03/2007 Posts 196 Re: MSC Napoli - Gone by next year's Folk Festival?? The plan to remove the remaining stern section seems to be taking shape. It appears that preparatory work to source equipment big enough for the job is already underway. The plan allows for a 2 phase operation to start in November 07 and be completed by Spring 08. The accomodation will be dismantled, using hydraulic cutting gear and the main engine prepared for removal - it is hoped this will be completed by January 08. The second phase will depend on optimum weather conditions and will involve lifting the reduced down stern section with the worlds only piece of lifting equipment big enough for the job! They hope to lift the section and then slip in a submerged barge which will then be floated. The operation could be completed by March 2008 - this will attract the crowds - bonuses for the traders again! Hmmmm - March winds!!!        Report

31/10/2007, 12:52 PM Seadog Joined on 05/03/2007 Posts 196 Re: MSC Napoli - Tug and tow arrive off Sidmouth Tug BB Ocean towing a heavy lift crane barge is currently about 3 miles south of Sidmouth - this is the gathering of resources ready to start the first phase of the operation to remove the stern section. We should expect to see vessels with cutting gear arrive in the near future.      Report

The crane barge that was towed on-scene a couple of days ago, and now alongside the stern section, is the Anna 4 - she will soon be joined by vessels equipped with cutting gear. It would have been interesting to have had a webcam pointing at all that has gone on in the past - says he with hindsight! We'll soon see the accommodation housing getting smaller and smaller - let us hope that no further oil residue is disturbed when they start working in the engine-room.      Report

Living some little way away it is very difficult to find out what is going on with the MSC Napoli. This site appears to be right up to date. Thank you all for that. I think that some contributors to this thread are interested in the sheer variety of vessels and operations going on. Because we are abroad a lot we have missed much, but none the less I have enjoyed trying to identify the various vessels that I have seen on various visits. One has escaped my amateur efforts: it was at the time the Napoli bows were towed away by the Anglian Earl. One that day, around the stern section of the Napoli were the Terramare 1 and an elderly black hulled, red superstructured tug, with no funnel and a longish name. I only saw this vessel that day - but then we can only visit every now and then. Can anyone help me identify this vessel?    Report

Another unidentified crane barge arrived on-scene this morning - towed in by the Russian salvage vessel Vzmorye. It's getting crowded out there.   Wheeler: The only other vessels that I can remember being on scene at the time the bow section left were tugs RT Magic Smit Bronco and oil dispersant vessel Union Beaver. No, the vessel I saw on the morning the bows left Weston Mouths was not one of  the three you mention - it was quite small, a bit longer than the Smit Bronco and, I thought, a lot older. A slightly raked stem, like some of the older Dutch tugs, but with theopen stern of the oil supply vessels. It is not important, I just find it interesting. It was moving about the area aound Napoli's stern , but also went out to the bows. I thought that it might have been working with the Terramare. Now things are getting moving again, we are off abroad. I hope there will be something left in a month's time or so, but in the meantime I will keep a watch on this site, which is by far the most informed I have found.      Report

Its been reported that cutting ops are to start in earnest tomorrow (Thursday) - I wonder if we'll have further vessels and equipment arriving or this is it for the time being. I just hope they are ready with a boom and other oil dispersant gear as the last thing we want is pollution at this stage of the game - after all they will be disturbing areas where some of the oil is at rest - there's a big engine room down there with one hellava big engine and at least 2 generators.        Report

I do recall a small vessel going out to the Anglian Earl just before the towing voyage commenced - I believe it took out that MCA chappie - Robin Middleton -to Belfast.      Report
