The late, late shopping show in Budleigh Salterton!
December 2006
BUDLEIGH traders declared this year’s late-night shopping evening the best ever, with many reporting a boom in business.
Hundreds watched as Father Christmas took to his sleigh to ride through the town to his grotto.
Youngsters’ eyes were alight with wonder as a parade, led by the town’s fire brigade, followed by the Budleigh Carnival Club and Devon Diamonds Dance Group, snaked its way from Station Road through the town.
And the town’s superb Christmas light display, supplied by the chamber of commerce and erected by the Lions Club, shone up above.
Mayor Courtney Richards spent time meeting and greeting the crowds as he walked through the town.
After Santa had been seated in his Rolle Square grotto, the Rev Robert Charles led a carol service, accompanied by the Exmouth Town Band.
Youngsters from Drake’s School, in East Budleigh, and St Peter’s School, Budleigh, put on their dancing shoes and toe-tapped their way through town while a group of Morris dancers wowed the crowds.
Budleigh Salterton Chamber of Commerce chairman Alan Tilbury said: “Most of the businesses welcomed their customers with the best of their wares on sale to tempt the shoppers to buy, also offering goodies to eat and drink as a goodwill gesture for their loyalty during the year.”
