Festive Events in Braunton

Youngsters at Southmead Primary School get ready for their festive panto
• Youngsters at Southmead Primary School get ready for their festive panto.
A carol service on Braunton’s village green will mark the switching on of the Christmas lights and the start of festive celebrations.

The two organisations that take it in turn to plan the annual carol service are the Braunton Chamber of Commerce and the local Round Table.

This year it’s the turn of the Round Table to organise the carol service, which takes place on Friday, December 9 starting at 6pm.

This event is always popular with everyone in the village, both young and old, and of course it’s a chance for Father Christmas to pay an early visit.
In addition to all his usual jobs at this busy time of year, Father Christmas has been asked to present the business who wins the best dressed shop window with an award.

The traders are currently busy putting up the festive lights and Christmas trees outside their premises, the trees once again being supplied at cost price by courtesy of greengrocer, John Patt’s Ltd.

In addition to this, villagers will be able to add their contributions to the Christmas decorations by sponsoring a light bulb for just £1. Shops will have sponsorship forms and donation boxes available, and with the money raised, the Chamber of Commerce intend to not only repeat last year’s display at Choice Cottages on the corner of Exeter and Caen Street, but in addition, will organise a display in the centre of the village.

Together with the Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce hope to grow the Christmas celebrations and make England’s largest village truly sparkle with the festive feel.

Why not come over and spend time exploring what Braunton has to offer? It’s only a short drive from Barnstaple, with a free, centrally located car park right next to the gurgling River Caen.

Nearby is the Museum, which was originally a bakehouse right up until the 1970’s. Today it is home to much of the history about this 6th Century village.

As far as shopping goes, Braunton is known for its individual shops that range from gift lines and toiletries, to surf wear and stunning gifts for the home and pets.

It has a wealth of individual traders not found in the larger centres and it’s this that makes Braunton a very special place to shop at Christmas.
