Festive Events in Axminster

There are a wide range of festive events in Axminster in the run up to Christmas

One of the Axminster traditions in the build-up to Christmas is the staging of the Christmas Music Hall by the Alternative Company Theatre Unlimited.

Written and directed by Michael Steer, it features a range of sketches and songs and a potted pantomime starring some of the children of the area.

It is due to be staged at the Guildhall from Thursday, December 7 to Saturday, December 9.

The Chamber of Commerce will be holding its annual Christmas meal at Cloakham Lawn Sports Centre on Saturday, December 9. Fred Wells, chairman, said: “It is open to anyone wanting to go and tickets are available from the Paint Palette, Chard Street.”

Saturday, December 9. Axminster Christmas Country Market. 9.30am – noon. Masonic Hall, South Street.

Axe Valley Community College will be holding its annual Carol Service at the Minster on Wednesday, December 13.

Friday, December 15. Christmas Bingo. Doors open 7pm, eyes down 8pm.Cloakham Lawn Sports Centre. Seasonal prizes.

In Musbury, a Christmas tree festival is being staged at St Michael’s Church on Saturday, December 16 and Sunday, December 17, open between 10.30am and 5pm. A Christmas concert will open the event on Friday, December 15, with a light-hearted programme by performers from the area.

The event will be drawn to a close with a carol service, starting at 6.30pm on the Sunday.
It will feature trees decorated by community groups and businesses to reflect their activity or work.

Details of the Christmas services will be available at the different churches.

Around the villages

No doubt the villagers of Northleigh will be turning out in force on Sunday, December 10, when Circus Berzercus comes to town at 7.30pm. They provide a lighthearted, fun-filled show for all the family to enjoy. Seriously silly juggler extraordinaire Ben Cornish and clown par excellence Steve Eldridge will have the audience laughing out loud at the antics of Gerald and Wallace. Precise, short tempered, vain gentleman juggler Gerald meets his match in inexperienced, insensitive and incompetent new trainee Wallace. Ben and Steve use their combined skills in a show of misunderstanding and controlled mayhem. It is pure fun.

This is part of the Villages in Action programme sponsored in part by East Devon District Council. For details call 01404 831292.

Escot Gardens and fantasy woodland has Christmas treats on offer at a special open weekend on December 2 and 3. There will be free entry to the gardens and special surprises in the Coach House Restaurant, the Pet and Aquatic Centre and the House of marbles Gift Shop. There will be no charge for Christmas treats but a collection for charity will be made.

Christmas craft courses are also being offered during December weekends. There will be fully supervised children’s courses for making Christmas presents and designing their own cards, all in a natural setting. For more details telephone Alan Bruford, the Education Ranger, on 07814 036634 (8.30am to 5.30pm).
