A crisp still night and carols on the Green is always the perfect way to begin Christmas in Braunton. The weather might not be a sure thing, of course, but the popularity of the annual concert is not in doubt with large crowds turning out year after year to support it.
It will take place on Friday, December 15 at 6pm and is organised this year by the village Chamber of Commerce, which takes it in turns with Braunton Rotary Club to stage the event.
Children from the three village primary schools— Caen, Kingsacre and Southmead — will lend their voices to those of villagers and music from the Ilfracombe Salvation Army Band for this traditional community Christmas gathering.
The Reverend Anne Thorne from St Brannock’s Church will conduct the service and Father Christmas will also be in attendance to hand out gifts to all the youngsters.
Roast chestnuts and hot food plus mince pies donated by Tommy Turner at Costcutter will be available to ward off the chill.
Once again Braunton Chamber is providing and installing Christmas trees outside shop premises the week before the carol service.
The parish council will be supplying a tree on the Village Green and lighting around the Crosstree Centre, while this year there will also be a very large tree plus Santa’s sleigh on the Square in Braunton.
With its independent traders and traditional village shops — plus surf and skate outlets — Braunton has always offered a different shopping experience to the major retail centres.
Free parking and with everything in easy reach, has always proved attractive, particularly as it is possible without joining the traditional festive melee and traffic jams of other places.
There is always plenty to see and do during the festive season in Braunton, which always endeavours to live up to its reputation as the largest village in Britain.
The church carol service will be held on December 17 this year, at 6.30pm and all are welcome.
Christmas is a special time for children and families, with the popular Carols at the Crib Service taking place on Christmas Eve from 4pm. Midnight Mass will begin that night at 11pm, and then on Christmas morning the Family Service will begin at 9.45am.
The schools will be busy too. The Caen Primary Christmas Fair will take place on Friday, December 1 at 2.30pm. The event is organised by the school PTA and all are welcome.
Southmead Friends Association will be holding a Christmas Bazaar at the school on Monday, December 11 from 3.15pm, with festive stalls, stands and activities.
Infants from Southmead will be leading a service at Christchurch in the village on Wednesday, December 13, incorporating a tableau from their nativity production.
