Archant

A DJ-ing 100-year-old has put her longevity down to the ‘right genes’ – as she has four cousins who have already reached the milestone.

Marjorie Hodnett, who was born in North London and moved to the Sid Valley in 1956 to teach reception students at All Saints Primary School, celebrated her special day with friends and family.

She currently resides in sheltered housing offered by Abbeyfield Court, and said she ‘keeps the place tidy’ and carries out most tasks by herself.

Despite her years, Marjorie remains active in the community by volunteering at her local nursing home, Abbeyfield Court, where she DJs for the residents with a mix of classical and popular music.

Her love for music started young when she sung in the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1948 London Olympics. House manager Mira Yohanson described Marjorie as the ‘sharpest knife in our box of knives’ and said she has the ability ‘turn her hand to anything she wants to’.

To celebrate her birthday, Marjorie held a coffee morning at Abbeyfield House, which raised £219 in ‘birthday present donations’ for Devon Air Ambulance. She enjoyed a buffet lunch and cream tea with family members.
