The Devon writer and photographer Robert Hesketh was the speaker at this season's first meeting of East Devon Luncheon Club.

Robert is an expert on local history who has published 70 books about Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.

At  the October lunch meeting he gave a talk about Devon surnames, telling the story behind several interesting names including many with worldwide links.

Simon Card, chairman of the club, said: “It was a really interesting talk and Robert ranged across the subject of surnames showing us his vast knowledge on the subject.

"We had an excellent turnout of 75 members who are all looking forward to the months ahead."

The club meets monthly at the Victoria Hotel, Sidmouth, from October to March.

The next luncheon is on Tuesday, November 21 and the guest speaker will be Ron Hutchinson, former chauffeur for the aristocracy and the royal family, including the late Queen. He is an in-demand speaker whose talk is called 'Life Through the Rear View Mirror'.
