Devon Air Ambulance are shining a light on charity shops by taking part in the More Than A Shop campaign.
The initiative, by the Charity Retail Association, is to show that charity shops aren't simply retail outlets, but integral parts of local communities.
Devon Air Ambulance (DAA) proudly supports this campaign, with 20 charity shops and an online presence contributing to their income.
But they don't simply aspire to generate funds.
Pete Vallance, head of business development at DAA, explains: "Whether it's for that much-needed bargain or treat, second-hand shopping is not just an ethical and more affordable choice, but it is actually very trendy right now.
"Not only are we committed to pioneering sustainability through our charity shops, but we are also keen to ensure that at the heart of every community we are in, Devon Air Ambulance shops welcome inclusivity and promote a sense of community for all."
A prime example of this approach is visible at DAA’s Barnstaple Community Hub & Charity Shop.
This innovative space does not merely sell goods, but fosters community spirit where locals can connect and support one another–an ethos promoted across all DAA charity shops.
Mr Vallance added: "The ethos for developing our shops across Devon ensures that we have built local community connections, whether it is a craft table to keep people active in North Devon or a warm space with coffee in Torbay".
Furthermore, each shop contributes to DAA's mission of saving lives, with public-use defibrillators available 24/7 at or near each location.
DAA also partners with Owens Organic Coffee® to sell Crew's Brew, offered at DAA’s high street charity shops and online.
Notably, the St Marychurch charity shop near Torquay also serves as a community hub, indicative of the organisation's commitment to 'More Than a Shop'.
For individuals with a penchant for nostalgia, DAA’s Vintage and Variety shops in Dartmouth and Topsham offer a unique shopping experience.
Themed as 'time capsules' these shops further contribute to the vibrancy of local high streets.
Mr Vallance reiterated: "By shopping in a Devon Air Ambulance charity shop, you are not only supporting sustainability, but you will be donating to a cause that is 100% funded by donations so that we can be there for anyone in need."
More Than a Shop Week takes place between April 22 and 29, 2024, offering an ideal opportunity for locals to donate or shop at their local DAA charity store.
