A STUDENT from Newton Poppleford hopes a charity quiz can help his planned fundraising trek to Everest base camp reach new heights.

Former Sidmouth College student Alex Dunn, 18, is aiming to undertake the expedition in August and raise £3,000 for Childreach International – which boosts disadvantaged youngsters across the globe.

The Lark Rise resident, who is reading psychology at Birmingham University, has organised a quiz at Newton Poppleford Village Hall on May 17.

Alex’s challenge, which he is taking on with a friend, will see him ascend 5,364 metres up the mountain.

He was won over by the charity when he researched its work.

“I do feel for children that don’t have the same opportunities I’ve had,” said Alex.

Childreach International carries out projects across the world to provide opportunities for disadvantaged children. It carries out education, health and rights and protection schemes.

Alex has already hosted a jumble sale and barbecue and has been washing cars to raise funds.

The quiz night begins at 7pm and tickets are available from Lesley Dunn on 01395 568792.
