The East Devon community has come together to support Hospiscare’s East Devon Day Hospice Appeal - already raising more than £18.5k in the past two months.

Music, cake sales, and bingo are just some of the events that have seen more than 70 individual donations flood in for the appeal.

Appeal fundraiser Sarah Smith said: “We have been overwhelmed by the number of local people who want to get involved.

“We still have a long way to go to raise the £250k needed to complete, equip and run our new day hospice but this is an amazing start.

“Local people and businesses have been so supportive; one of our weekly Hospiscare lottery players even donated £100 to the appeal from her £1000 win.

“We are so grateful to everyone in the community for raising a whopping £18,968 so far.”

Hospiscare announced its plans to open a new day hospice in East Devon last autumn, bringing care closer to thousands of Hospiscare patients and their families across East Devon.

The local charity received a grant of £510k from NHS England as well as generous pledges from its sister charities, Budleigh, Exmouth and Lympstone and Sidmouth Hospiscare, to bring the plans to fruition.

And as well as applying to trust funds, Hospiscare launched the East Devon Appeal in October 2013.

Two musical events took place on Saturday with the La La Choirs and the Budleigh Salterton Ukulele Strumming Club and the Sidmouth Town Band and Gospel Choir each heading their own events.

The Exmouth Police Club raised more than £350 after holding a music evening, while the Budleigh Salterton Lions raised £447 at a bingo evening.

Many events have been planned for the coming months, with the auctioning of a bronze sculpture being one of the highlights of an art event taking place in June.

Art Extra will be an exciting exhibition of more than 100 original works of art. The bronze sculpture of celebrated racehorse ‘Arkle’ was donated to Hospiscare by local artist Jane Scott-Fox who became a Hospiscare patient after being diagnosed with peritoneal cancer.

Jane died in January 2014 but wanted future Hospiscare patients to benefit from the ‘marvellous’ care she received from the charity.

Jane’s husband Charles said: “We were overwhelmed by the attention from the [Pine Lodge] day hospice in Tiverton. If Hospiscare can get the money together to create [a day hospice] in Honiton people will be able to enjoy the care and benefits we received.”
