A CAMPAIGNING independent district and county councillor has signaled her intent to be East Devon’s next MP and will run for Parliament in 2015.

Claire Wright will launch of her bid to win a seat at the next General Election in Sidmouth on Tuesday (June 3).

The 39-year-old said that she feels compelled to stand for the East Devon constituency because she believes that party loyalty is being prioritised over local residents’ views and needs.

Mrs Wright, who represents Ottery St Mary on both the district and county councils, said: “Many people have asked me to run for Parliament. I have decided it is the right thing to do and now is the right time to do it.

“Many voters tell me that they are disenchanted with party politics. They say that they have voted in a particular way all their lives but can no longer bring themselves to do so. They believe passionately that their views are not being heard, or even expressed, in Parliament.

“They are angry at the relaxation of planning rules and how big business appears to influence government policy. They are also very concerned at the widespread cuts in public services which central government is forcing councils to make.

“I am, and want to be, the opposite of a big political party. Because I am free to speak my mind publicly and campaign on issues of importance to local people, I would never have to choose between my conscience and a party line.

“I believe that I have demonstrated this at local and county council level and that my experience means that I can represent East Devon residents in Parliament more effectively than anyone else.”

Mrs Wright will visit communities to hear how local residents feel that government policy is affecting them.

As part of her campaign, she is launching a survey to help her to focus on issues which are significant for local voters.

Mrs Wright hopes that funds for her campaigning will be raised by the residents of East Devon and stresses that she will not accept donations from corporations.
