‘Community remedy’ plan for low level crime

PUBLISHED: 10:00 23 May 2014

Archant

Victims of low level crimes are getting a say on punishments for offenders in a new Government measure being implemented by the county’s police boss.

Tony Hogg, the police and crime commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, has launched a ‘community remedy’ consultation to give input on what action they think is appropriate.

The options are punitive, restorative or rehabilitative, and could include mediation, apologising, repairing damage to property or cleaning graffiti, or doing unpaid work.

The move is part of the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act and is aimed at putting victims at the heart of punishment of offenders.

Police must agree that any punishments are appropriate.

The consultation closes on June 30. For a feedback form, email opcc@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk or phone 01392 225555.
