Crackdown on 70mph speedsters

PUBLISHED: 06:30 19 April 2014

Archant

Police will start monitoring a quiet road in Sidford after residents complained about reckless drivers speeding in excess of 70mph.

One householder in Brook Lane said the situation was ‘out of control’ and he has to take unnecessary and extreme precautions when reversing out of his driveway.

He insisted that the speeding is happening ‘through the day and the night’ and needs to be looked at to make sure it is combated.

PCSO Chris Bolsover said that he and his colleagues were not aware of an issue in the lane, but can take speed monitoring equipment there when they next carry out their round of speed checks.

He added: “Members of the public who do have a problem should contact the police and let us know, hopefully with a vehicle registration number.

“We have added Brook Lane to our list of places to carry out checks. However, it is up to people to keep us informed if the issue escalates again.”

Other roads in Sidford have had speed-prevention methods installed since the turn of the year as police continue to crack down on the problem.

A group of six villagers were recently provided training and apparatus to combat motorists who ignore the speed limits in place on Burscombe Lane.

Sid Road is also in the beginnings of speed recording after it was brought to the attention of the police.

Now, residents in Brook Lane want it to be next on the agenda before an accident truly brings home the danger of the problem.

“The situation has gotten horrendous,” the householder added. “Something should be done. The road should have a 20mph speed limit imposed.

“This is a lane, not a road. Parents pick up their children from school and yet we still have this speeding going on.”
