Archant

Residents in Devon felt the ground shake this afternoons when an earthquake hit the county.

The British Geological Society has confirmed the earthquake struck at around 1.21pm this afternoon.

Julian Bukits, from the society, confirmed the earthquake occurred around halfway between the North Devon coast and South Wales.

The society has said the earthquake originated in the Bristol Channel and registered a magnitude of 4.1 with a depth of 5km.

The ground shook in the area for around 10 seconds and has been felt as far as Ilfracombe and Exmouth.

According to website earthquaketrack.com, Devon has not experienced an earthquake for more than a decade. The last quake to be recorded was in Bideford 13 years ago, with a magnitude of 4.0.

The earthquake has been reported in Barnstaple, Swansea, Exeter, Newton Abbot, Clyst St Mary and even as far south as Cornwall.
