Sidmouth Lifeboat issues warning to dog walkers

DOG owners to be extra-vigilant when walking near cliff edge after a Labradoodle fell to its death from Danger Point near Otter Mouth on Wednesday.

Sidmouth Lifeboat was scrambled to search for the pet at around 5.50pm and carried out a close inshore search.

The animal was found at the foot of the cliff, brought by sea back to Sidmouth where its owners were waiting.

“This is the third dog in the last 18 months to have died after falling over the cliff edge in our area,” said Sidmouth Lifeboat senior coxswain Phil Shepperd.

“I know as a dog owner that it’s not easy, but I would appeal to owners to be extra-vigilant when walking with dogs near the cliff edge.”

The lifeboat crew of Simon Sparrow, Phil Marish and Theo Burgess and tractor driver Mark Wearing were stood down at 7.15pm.

  • Phil Sheppard says it's "not easy" to be vigilant when walking with a dog near the cliffs. How difficult is it to take the obvious precaution of keeping your dog on a lead?
