Plan for more classroom space at primary school

13:37 20 February 2014

ROOM for 30 extra children will be created at Sidmouth Primary School’s Woolbrook Road site if plans to replace a modular classroom unit, with one double the size, are approved.

An application has been submitted to provide students and teachers with a newer and larger prefabricated building, writes Stefan Gordon.

With the demand for places growing, school bosses have identified a one-year-old unit – currently being used in Newton Abbott – and want to relocate it to Sidmouth in summer 2015.

The current modular building was constructed at the rear of the site in 2006 and provides an ‘adequate but not ideal’ teaching environment, according to plans.

Proposals state: “The requirement for school places in the Sidmouth area has continued to grow. As a result it is proposed to replace this old unit with a newer twin classroom providing a better teaching environment and room for an additional 30-plus children on the site.

“The proposed use will not change as a result of the project. It is hoped that this new classroom block will provide the additional space to meet the educational needs to serve the children and staff. The new unit will be an improvement over the existing mobile unit.”

The district council will decide the fate of plans.
