Pupils from Brixington Primary School were immersed in the Indian culture as part of a project to learn more about the country and its people.

Brixington Primary School pupils experienced a taste of India as part of a project to learn more about the country’s culture.

As part of the school’s India week the youngsters were visited by Carnegie medal winner and Exmouth author Mal Peet, and his wife Elspeth Graham, who in 2010 together penned Cloud Tea Monkeys – a traditional folk tale about a mother and daughter’s life on an Indian tea plantation - which the pupils have been reading.

The youngsters also learned the moves of traditional Indian dancing, with dancer Sheila Cove.

The week-long activities ended with the pupils sampling the tastes of India when the school kitchen staff cooked up some traditional dishes.

Indian-style clothing was worn by the youngsters, with the boys sporting trousers with a long t-shirt, or shirt, while the girls wore sari outfits.

A spokesman said: “To enable the children to get an authentic experience and enjoy a real hands-on event we devised a week of activities to immerse them in the sport, culture, history, art, food and geography of this amazing country.”
