St John’s School in Sidmouth celebrated a landmark 200 pupils last week – just seven years after low numbers meant it almost closed.
Since then the number of full-time students on roll has grown year-on-year, due, in part, to the age range expanding because parents do not want their children to leave.
The school is launching a sixth form in September and currently has some 50 youngsters boarding, but there were just seven staying there in 2006.
Despite local support, it was set to close until the International Education System took it, over with the aim of it becoming the company’s flagship institution in the UK.
It is now part of a network of 27 schools around the world.
