An Ottery Explorer Scout has received a silver Duke of Edinburgh award for completing a whole host of challenges.

Alex Lavallin, 17, was presented his certificate and silver pin badge at a group meal in Exeter.

He had to complete all the elements of the award, which encompasses volunteering, learning skills and a three-day unaided expedition, which he and three other Explorers completed last October.

Alex, a Bicton College student, said this was the highlight, despite the appalling conditions during their trip from Colyton to West Bay.

He also spent six months on each of the other modules, including volunteering at Whimple cubs and learning first aid.

Alex said it game him a real sense of achievement, and is already planning to start working towards the gold award.

He said: “You have to be self motivated to complete it all and it involves a great deal of planning to undertake the expedition, you need to be organised and work well in a team.”

Ottery Explorer leader John Green said: “It is a real privilege to present this award to Alex.

These types of challenges provide some great experiences for the young people.”
