Excitement is growing as the new Hospiscare East Devon Day Hospice is taking shape.

The Hospiscare fundraising team, resplendent in bright orange T shirts, spent a morning in Honiton telling people about the hospice and the fundraising events being held to help pay for it.

Hospiscare appeal fundraiser Sarah Smith said: “We are still on track for opening for our patients by early next year. Please go and take a look at the site in King Street. It’s now very visible with walls in place and lots of people on site, making it a reality.

“The garden design is being finalised and we are looking forward to sharing our plans with our supporters. Soon we will have a complete list of plants, hardware and water feature. It’s designed to be tranquil, calm, warm and loving!”

Julie Ingram, of Devon Tiles, who is supplying the tiles for the bathroom free of charge, turned up to say hello and take a look at the site. She added: “We are thrilled to be able to help with this project; the centre will make such a difference to our community. Having helped with previous projects we wanted to be involved again in some way.”

So far £137,000 has been raised towards the £250,000 target to complete the build, and equip and run the hospice for the first year.

Hospiscare fundraisers were promoting two major fundraising events for the hospice. The Big Devon Bake Off takes place during September 13 to 21 and bakers are being encouraged to have a tea party or organise a bake off competition. This can be at home, work or school, in a village or community hall or wherever you fancy.

A Jolly Good Jaunt is a countryside walk with a vintage twist, starting and ending at the Deer Park Hotel, Honiton, on October 5. Walkers are being encouraged to wear tweed and stout shoes are recommended for this 5 or 13-mile sponsored walk. Dogs are welcome.
