More warnings issued for wind and rain this weekend

Road users are being urged to take caution this weekend as more strong winds and heavy rain is scheduled to smash into the UK.

The weather surge is forecast from this afternoon (Friday, February 7) and into Saturday, with several bands of heavy rain expected across the South West from tonight.

The downpours could result in further flooding and accumulated rainfall of 30 to 40mm, and further problems with local flooding are possible.

Met Office experts have also issued an Amber Alert for the South West for very strong southerly winds from 5am on Saturday morning.

These could result in gusts of 50 to 60 miles per hour across the South West with gusting up to 70mph on exposed roads near the South coast.

The Severn Bridges could also experience gusts of around 50 to 60mph, with possible gusts to 70mph for the M4 Second Crossing.

Winds are expected to drop below 60 mph by midnight on Saturday night, but it remains windy into Sunday.

Road users driving high-sided vehicles, riding motorcycles or towing caravans are being urged to check traffic and weather conditions before setting out on journeys and to heed any advice such as speed restrictions once they are on the strategic road network.

The public should be aware of the risk of disruption from strong winds, which may cause some damage, with disruption due to fallen trees and debris onto roads.

Rob Llewellyn, Highways Agency Emergency Planning Manager in the South West said:“As we are in for another couple of days of bad weather we are urging road users to continue checking traffic and weather conditions before setting out on journeys and to heed any advice such as speed restrictions once they are on the strategic road network.

“Be aware of sudden gusts of wind, and give high-sided vehicles, caravans, motorbikes and bicycles plenty of space. In the event of persistent high winds we may need to close certain bridges to traffic for a period, so please be alert for warnings of closures and follow the clearly signed diversion routes.”
