Organisers behind the popular event had cast doubt over whether it would take place this year, after long-range weather reports warned of gale force gusts over the Christmas period.

But in light of recent forecasts, they have now said there is a ‘very strong possibility’ the swim could go ahead as planned.

A swim spokesman said on Tuesday: “From what we can see at the moment it looks like the swim may well take place.

“The current forecast it for Thursday (26) shows light winds until the evening, but the weather can change quickly.

“We didn’t want to over react last week but the long-range forecast was very bad for Christmas and Boxing Day.”

If the swim goes ahead, participants are asked to sign in and show off their fancy dress in front of the Sidmouth Sailing and Sea Angling Club from 10.30am.

Updates will appear on the Herald website.
