Do something about it!
Valentine’s Day can be a miserable time for those in abusive relationships and a reminder has gone out to those affected that help is available in East Devon.
As February 14 approaches, police and partner agencies across the district are urging people who are at risk or suffering domestic abuse to use services.
Gerry Moore, the community safety officer for East Devon, said “Valentine’s Day can be extremely special for some people but, unfortunately, for others, this is not always the case.
“There are many factors during this time, such as stress, high expectations and financial pressures, which may lead to a relationship becoming abusive.
“Often the abuse is not just physical; it may be emotional or financial as well.”
Mr Moore added: “I would like to take this opportunity to remind people that specialist police officers and other support services are available and help is at hand should people need it.
“We would urge victims, perpetrators, their friends or families to seek help sooner rather than later.”
Anyone experiencing domestic violence or abuse can contact the police by phoning 101 or in the case of an emergency 999.
Locally, women at risk needing to speak to someone immediately and confidentially may call 0800 328 3070 (24 hours).
Men and women of any age should call 03030 300 112 for advice and support.
For male and female perpetrators, there is a national helpline on 0808 802 4040.
Alternatively, you can self refer to the REPAIR programme in East Devon by phoning 07870 980272.
