SIDMOUTH’S ‘ludicrous’ seafront pedestrian crossing should be reviewed by highways bosses, according to a town councillor.

Ann Liverton told colleagues the feature on The Esplanade should be discussed.

She said, at this time of year, it was ‘ludicrous’ and questioned how much pollution was coming from ‘backed-up’ traffic caused by people ‘ambling across’.

“Surely there must be some way of controlling that crossing,” said Councillor Liverton, who asked for the matter to be referred to the town council’s Traffic Management Group.

  • I agree with Frankiesmall, this crossing needs some form of light control to give traffic a fair chance at busy times.

  • The other day I drove past, as I often do as a taxi driver, to see a community police officer waving traffic through and allowing pedestrians to cross in groups. The intervention especially during folk week was gratefully received. I understand this is an impractical solution but surely a pelican or puffin crossing would be much more practical in such highly used area, both by pedestrians and traffic. I have known in busy times this crossing to cause back up of traffic all up the high street!
