SIDMOUTH’S Cancer Research store was reopened following a substantial refurbishment.
The Fore Street charity shop has had a lick of paint inside and out, new lighting fitted and better heaters installed.
Bosses say the makeover will make the outlet more comfortable and pleasant for volunteer staff and customers.
Manager Diane Davies said: “I think it’s fantastic, it was desperately overdue.
“The shop is now much lighter.
“I’ve just completed my first year as manager and this is something that is marvellous to go forward.”
Volunteer of seven years George Hutchinson did the honours at the reopening and said it was a ‘privilege’.
“The improvements are absolutely tremendous – it’s brought the shop into the 21st century,” he said.
“The shop is a credit to the townspeople of Sidmouth – they are the lifeblood of the organisation.
“I’ve lived and worked all over the country and never seen a town or village with such strong community spirit.
“This isn’t just a shop, it’s an emporium of hope that we can eradicate this disease.”
George said the goodwill shown towards the charity was exemplified in the fact that people were ‘terrified’ the outlet had shut permanently during its temporary week-and-a-half closure.
The shop is always looking for volunteers and anyone interested can contact Diane on 01395 577203.
