A single mum has slammed ‘disgusting’ parking restrictions at a Sidmouth venue after being hit with a fine without even getting out of her car.

Sue Walters spent six minutes turning round at the Conservative Club after dropping her children off at the cinema and was hit with a £60 penalty.

She is still waiting for a reply from car park managers Premier Park after she objected following the incident on Hallowe’en.

The fine was due last Friday, but she said she continues to refuse to pay it.

“They can put me in prison if they want,” added Sue, of Blackthorn Close.

“It’s disgusting what they are doing – if you go to a town you don’t know, are they going to do this to everyone?”

The 46-year-old added: “These new signs are like they’re admitting liability – they should refund everyone caught out by the last ones.”

She said she wouldn’t have even been in the carpark for six minutes if the traffic hadn’t been so heavy, and that is evident from the photo they sent her of her in the carpark.

Another lady has had more luck.

Jennifer Leaman, of West Hill, was fined while playing a game of euchre at the club on November 4, but on Monday her appeal was accepted.

She had followed the instructions and gave her licence plate number at reception, but still received a letter from the company which maintains the club’s carpark.

“I wasn’t illegally parked, but Premier Park declined my appeal and even threatened me with a £100 fine,” said the lady, who is in her sixties.

The Conservative Club apologised to Jennifer and said that she wouldn’t have to pay the fine, but she has not had such assurances from the parking company.

She added: “The sign says you’re not even allowed to drive in – I think that poor lady is going to have to pay.”

The club brought in Premier Park in response to prolonged abuse of the car park, and Jennifer said she had heard that it was working as an effective deterrent.

Peter Glazier, the treasurer of the club, declined to comment on either lady’s case.

  • So, there's a roundabout to turn round just yards away, but no, I must go into the restricted CC car park, because I feel like it, then I'll make a fuss when I'm fined for it. Hard cheese. Funny how a couple of single mums in cars give us all a bad name... :(
