THERE will be no excuse for male town councillors not to wear a tie at monthly meetings.

On Monday, Sidmouth Town Council chairman, Councillor Stuart Hughes, sported a specially-produced town council tie, complete with the town crest, which councillors can buy for £8.

The tie has a dark blue background with diagonal light blue stripes edged with a thin green line and the whole tie is embossed and carries the name Sidmouth Town Council.

For female councillors, a metal enamel pin with the town crest on a white background has been produced, which costs £7.50 to buy.

Mr Hughes said: “I always wear either my district council or county council ties to town council meetings, so we have come up with a town council tie.

“I think it is lovely. The first time I wore it was at FolkWeek. I was walking to the Ham and someone stopped me and said how lovely the tie is and asked if I was the mayor of Sidmouth.”

Councillor Peter Sullivan will be taking some of the ties and pins with him on an exchange visit to Le Locle, Switzerland, on September 22. Le Locle is Sidmouth’s twin town.

  • As a French woman, I feel quite baffled by the lack of the sense the previous comment makes... I can assure readers that punctuation and grammar are very well taught in French school and this is therefore most extraordinary. I also feel quite shown up as a foreigner by this evident lack of respect for those 'natives' who work so hard at managing our town's development and standing in the region. If they want a new tie, let them have a new tie! What is the big idea, trying to burst their bubble!? Gentlemen, wear your tie with pride and ignore the ignorants' comments! Now, I wonder, do the ladies have something special to wear too?
