The family of a renowned businessman and councillor who died last year say they are ‘thrilled’ a memorial to him in Ottery is going ahead.
The town council had been keen to create a tribute to its former member Tony Abbott, but had needed agreement with NatWest to site a planter in front of its property.
But at Monday’s meeting Mayor Glyn Dobson said the bank had agreed permission for the memorial to be positioned, and revealed Ottery in Bloom will now look after it.
The planter will have a plaque dedicated to the Mr Abbott, who owned the successful DIY stores in Ottery and Seaton which bore his name with his wife Viv.
Cllr Dobson said Ottery in Bloom would now be consulting her to see which flowers she would like to be placed in the memorial to him.
Chris Abbott, Tony’s son, said whole the family are ‘delighted’ with the news the tribute is going ahead.
“Dad was a big figure in the town, he served as a councillor for more than 10 years, was a former chairman, and obviously through the business he was known by so many people,” he said.
“We were amazed by how many people came to his funeral and showed their support.
“So to have a lasting memorial to him is fantastic, we are thrilled.”
