AN events organiser believes there is not enough public interest to resurrect a Sidmouth Caribbean night – after he failed to revive the fun at Knowle this summer.

Paul Keating has pulled the plug on his plans for August 9, saying that staging the event would result in a ‘great [financial] loss’.

He needed to raise £3,000 through ‘crowd funding’ to make the festivities a reality – but only managed to secure £1,140.

Exeter-based Mr Keating told the Herald this week: “It will not be going ahead. I truly believe that there is not enough public interest in bringing it back for the event to make a viable and successful return.”

He added the cancellation of the event had occurred despite his best efforts and much ‘hard work and promotion’.

The event at Knowle would have been for 499 people, though originally Mr Keating had hoped to raise £12,000 for an event with a 2,000 capacity.

The Herald reported in April how Mr Keating was among two completely separate parties with different hopes of bringing back a Caribbean night to the town.

The other is Ben Waring, the last man to organise the fun, who has his sights set on 2015.

His event in 2010 was the only time in the last decade the festivities have taken place.

Mr Waring has teamed up with his predecessor, Stuart Hughes, to look into staging a night in the Ham Marquee after next year’s folk festival.

Profits would go to youth projects in the town.

Historically, nearly £5,000 people would attend the Caribbean night.
