Ottery is getting rid of its Mayor’s Charity of the Year after the council said it had not proved a success.

The Mayor himself, Glyn Dobson, said while the Citizen of the Year award was going from strength-to-strength, there had not been enough interest in the sponsored charity idea to keep it going.

He said at Monday’s meeting it had been most successful in its first year, when the council chose to back Ottery Help Scheme, but since then it had not had the impact they had hoped for.

The idea behind the Mayor’s Charity of the Year was for Ottery Town Council to take a local cause and help promote it via its website and events.

It has previously sponsored Dance Action for Youth and Ottery Community Care Transport, but Cllr Dobson said they would not be a choosing a new charity for 2013.

However he did confirm the Citizen of the Year award would keep going, calling it ‘a great chance to recognise someone who has contributed to their community’.
