Scenes of Sidmouth’s history painted by local artist Peter Goodhall go on display at Kennaway House next Friday (September 21).

His See the Sea exhibition includes an oil depicting the problematic launching of the Sidmouth lifeboat Rimmington on September 5, 1872.

The lifeboat capsized on its first launch, then relaunched and was able to rescue the Guernsey brig Frederick William.

Peter has also painted Sidmouth beach busy with the fisher-folk of a century ago with their fish on the beach, before the days of buying fish from Port Royal.

In contrast to these traditional marine paintings are the most recent of Peter’s large contemporary paintings, featuring water, more fish and nudes in water.

His striking waterscape paintings have received plenty of international acclaim and have sold around the world.

The exhibition bringing together the two styles of marine painting – modern realism and classic representation – is on show until Sunday September 30, and admission is free.
