An application to build a pig farm on land designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) has been dismissed by a planning inspector.

The controversial appeal at Collyhead Farm in Venn Ottery would have accommodated some 750 pigs across two buildings.

In a decision announced today, Planning Inspector Pete Drew concluded that the proposed development ‘would harm the character and appearance of landscape’.

East Devon District Council (EDDC) had refused the original application from Chris Down of Crealy Farms in September 2012.

Chairman of EDDC’s Development Management Committee, Councillor Helen Parr, said: “This decision adds to a growing line of successes for the Council in upholding refusal of permission of developments that we consider unsuitable.

“We have a good track record in successfully defending such planning decisions – higher than the national average – and this latest victory underlines our continuing determination to protect our district from inappropriate development.”
