Archant

‘Is it a bird...is it a plane....is it a kangaroo...?’ Motorists were left scratching their heads over what appeared to be a dead kangaroo by the side of the M5 motorway, on the slip road towards Exmouth and Sidmouth.

Motorway drivers heading down the M5 slip road towards Exmouth and Sidmouth have been left wondering if an animal seen dead by the side of the road was a kangaroo.

The mystery animal was spotted at the weekend lying dead on the hard shoulder - on the slip road from Exeter towards the services roundabout - prompting some drivers to do a double take as they drove past.

One motorist, who did not want to be named, said: “I drove past five times - I was so convinced it was dead kangaroo.

“I know that sounds mad, but it had a long tail and face like a kangaroo, it was brown and the same size as one.

“It was only after the fifth drive-by, when my partner drove me so I could get a better look out of the window, I could see it was a fox.

“Normally foxes have a thick bushy tail, but this one’s tail was long and thin.

“The way it was lying on the road, with its front legs tucked up, it really looked like a kangaroo, and it had the same-shaped face.”

Another driver from Exeter, who also spotted the animal as he travelled past, said it looked ‘odd’.

A source at Crealy Great Adventure Park, at Clyst St Mary, said a call had been received from a concerned member of the public.

“Somebody rang Crealy on Sunday afternoon and said they saw a dead wallaby near the motorway,” said the source.

“I saw it and it was definitely a fox but I totally saw what they meant - the way it was laid and with the tail all wet and skinny – it looked very much like a wallaby.”
