A charity roadshow to show visually impaired people the help that is available will be in Sidmouth tomorrow (Saturday).

Devon in Sight’s series of events is visiting East Devon for the first time, recognising the need there is in the district.

In the past the roadshow has featured the Olympic torch carried by Devon-based visually impaired artist Barrie Goodfellow, and an opportunity to meet Dad’s Army star Bill Pertwee, the charity’s vice-patron.

It also brings together other causes and organisations that help people with little or no sight through appointments and drop-in sessions.

Devon in Sight’s outreach and activities worker, Ben Gavan, said: “Together we aim to show that there is a great deal of help available for those with visual impairments, and that sight loss need not be a barrier to prevent people leading independent lives.”

Among the organisations taking part are Blind Veterans UK, Oakhouse Foods, Dolphin Computer Access, Enhanced Vision, Action for Blind People, Call24, Guide Dogs, and the Macular Society.

The roadshow follows Ben’s visit to Sidmouth Library last Thursday, in which he demonstrated some of the visual aids available, from talking watches to electronic reading machines.

For more information on the Sidmouth roadshow, which will be at St John’s Hall in Blackmore Drive from 10am until 2pm, call Ben Gavan on 07943 514397.

The charity is based at Station House in Topsham and is open from Monday to Friday from 10am until 4pm.
