Sidmouth and Ottery crews tackle caravan fire

The caravan was ‘completely destroyed’ in the fire.

A man was taken to hospital after suffering smoke inhalation from a fire that completely destroyed a caravan.

Crews from Ottery, Sidmouth and a water foam carrier from Danes Castle attended the scene in Higher Metcombe and found the vehicle, measuring 18ft by 30ft, well alight.

The firefighters requested an ambulance and treated a man with first aid and oxygen therapy.

The fire was extinguished with one main jet and one compressed air foam jet. Crews also used a thermal imaging camera to ensure the property was safe.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “A man was taken to hospital by ambulance, we administered first aid and gave him oxygen.

“Crews also removed cylinders that they had deemed safe and isolated the electricity. We believe the fire was started deliberately.”
