Young explorers from Sidmouth set a course for success to help the Devon Juniors win a prestigious orienteering challenge.

Suki Hannan also took second place in her class but a bug in the system almost saw the county team lose out to their Bristol rivals.

After a recount the Devon Juniors claimed the Yvette Baker Trophy, named after the first British orienteer to win a world championship.

“Overall it was a very enjoyable day with face paints, running and cake, and we ended up with quite a large number of podium places,” said Suki, who lives in Winslade Road.

“And obviously winning was amazing, as we came second by two points last year!

“We have the most amazing coach, Tess Stone.

“She has helped me progress and is unbelievably dedicated to the sport, encouraging us to reach our full potential.”

The orienteers tore through the Sussex countryside, navigating woodland, pits, distinctive trees and vegetation boundaries to reach the checkpoints.

“I really enjoy orienteering as it both a physically and mentally challenging sport,” added the 14-year-old.

“It has been definitely worth going for years because all the Yvette Bakers I have been to have been really fun, and it is also a great way to make friends from other schools.”

The youngsters, all aged between 11 and 19, are from across Devon, studying in Colyton, Ottery, Sidmouth School, Woodroffe and Torquay.

Also in the team from Sidmouth are Emily Keenan and Max Ward-Weavin.
