BRAVE Sidmouth residents have been reminded the town’s famous Boxing Day Swim is looming large.

The December 26 tradition will again raise cash for the town’s branch of the RNLI.

“Each year it seems that little will deter hardy souls from taking part,” said organiser Keith Knight, “We are hoping for a sunny day, but know few will be put off if the weather is as cold as it has been recently.

“More swimmers arrive each year to join in the fun- from a couple of dozen a few years ago to more than 200 last year.”

It is hoped the event, which sees the Sidmouth Regatta Committee team up with the town’s branch of the RNLI, will attract a bumper number of fancy-dress clad swimmers and bigger crowds congregated on The Esplanade to cheer them on.

Participants are asked to sign a disclaimer absolving the organising committee of responsibility should they decide conditions aren’t suitable.

“We are very aware of these days of health and safety, and for that reason, organisers have asked for the co-operation of Sidmouth Lifeboat to provide ‘on the water’ cover for the duration of the swim,” said Keith.

The event, started in 1985, is used by many as a revival from the excesses of Christmas Day.

The swim is scheduled for around 11am. Entrants are asked to sign in and gather in front of the Sidmouth Sailing and Sea Angling Club from 10.30am to show off their fancy dress.

Swimmers are not sponsored but Sidmouth Branch RNLI will be on hand to collect donations. Tea and coffee will be served in the sailing club before and after the swim.

Keith emphasised the event is ‘weather permitting’ and the organisers’ decision is final. He asked entrants to be sensible and respect any decisions made.
