A ‘special piece’ of Ottery history has taken pride of place at The Volunteer Inn to help staff call time.

Landlords Mike and Jacqui Down proudly revealed the new clock, which has been created from a flaming tar barrel.

The decoration has added significance for the tar barrelling family as it is from the end of a barrel carried by Mike at the 2014 event – and is the first to have survived the burning flames.

Les White kept the end, which weighs around 30 kilos, while he decided what to do it.

He then found a clockface of approximately the right dimensions and trimmed it to fit the barrel end and presented it to the pub.

Jacqui said: “It is one of the kind, its incredibly special to us. We are thrilled with it, it’s a family heirloom.”

Underneath the clock is a photo of Mike carrying the barrel, which was snapped by photographer Nigel Fowler.

Mike added: “It’s a special piece of Ottery history.”
