For many, FolkWeek 2008 ended as it began – soaking wet. The opening days were due to intermittent rain storms which saw the cancellation of the first night’s Market Square performances.

But the last Friday afternoon was a purely pleasurable experience as hundreds of people flocked to the ford off Mill Street. They were there for the traditional Friday in the Ford send-off for FolkWeek.

As our pictures show, crowds gathered across the bridge and surrounding footpaths to celebrate the end of the week, with music and cheering, as a hardy group jumped into the water to soak each other down.

The annual impromptu gathering is overseen each year by Dick Stanger, MC and FolkWeek veteran.
