A KIDNAP attempt was once again foiled this weekend when around 70 pixies descended on Ottery to abduct members of St Mary’s church.

Several of the church’s bell ringers were targeted in the coup by pixies from the first and second Ottery Brownies, Beavers, Cubs and Rainbows just after 6.15pm last Saturday.

Thankfully they were apprehended in the town’s square where their ‘curse’ was broken and the traditional re-telling of the ‘pixies revenge’ legend was completed for another year.

It was the centre piece of the town’s annual, day long celebrations, which began at 2pm at the Land of Canaan with pet shows, drama recitals, folk rockers and prize giving.

Chair of the Pixie day committee, Simon Lowne, said: “The weather kept the crowds down a little bit but we were glad that the revenge happened and it raised money for the scouts and guides.”

The fete resumed again at 7pm with parachute games, a tractor scrap-yard challenge, music from a The King’s School band and the grand draw for the winner of the first pixie scarer competition.

And after last year’s horrendous weather even a little light rain could not dampen the spirits of revellers who stayed till 10.15pm to watch the grand fireworks display.

This year also saw the start of the Pixie scarer – similar to a scarecrow except they are designed to scare pixies –competition, which organisers hope will become an annual event.

Mr Lowne said: “There were about 20 entries this year as I think that some people were scratching their heads wondering what it was all about, so it’s obviously gathering some interest.”

Judged by Rev Simon Franklin, the business category was won by an Osama Bin Laden-inspired effigy by Orb of Ottery and the private category was won by Debbie Stuart with her angel strangling a pixie scarer.
