FRIENDS and family gathered to pay tribute to a much-loved member of the Branscombe community.

Charles ‘Nobby’ Clarke, 92, died peacefully at Dove Court Care Home in Seaton, on Wednesday, September 19. Friends and family paid their last respects at his funeral on Wednesday, at St Winifred’s Church in the village where he lived for more than 65 years.
Nobby was born in Barnstaple in 1915 and settled in Branscombe when he married a local girl, Wynne Woodrow, in 1938. He helped to found the Branscombe branch of the Royal British Legion in 1947 and published his first book of poetry in 2003 with the help of his neighbour Michael James.

Branscombe is Beautiful contained poems drawing on various parts of Nobby’s life, including the village community, his service in the war, the Royal British Legion and his fundraising for charities such as the Devon Air Ambulance.

Nobby leaves behind a son and daughter, Mike and Annette, grandchildren Sarah, Jeremy, Beverly and Thelma and great-grandchildren Katie and Charlie.
