Report findings welcomed

THE FINDINGS of the Napoli report have been welcomed by local councillors.

EDDC Councillor Chris Gibbings and member of the inquiry panel said if the report was adopted into Government legislation it would prevent Napoli type incidents from occurring in the future.

He said: “We held the inquiry not to apportion blame, but to find out the things we can do so it doesn’t happen again.”

Mr Gibbings will now take the report to EDDC in the hope it will be endorsed by elected councillors therefore adding more “clout” to the recommendations.

He added: “I would like it to be taken to the House of Commons perhaps by our MP, or at the very least the major recommendation to appoint the equivalent of a secretary of State’s
Representative of Salvage on land to deal with ships containers that come ashore.”

Mr Gibbings said it was foolish to think a similar disaster will not happen again and a land representative should be appointed “as soon as possible”.

Devon County Councillor Margaret Rogers and Branscombe resident said she felt encouraged by the report.

She added: “I am very pleased that the initiative the county council took…to form an Inquiry Committee, has led to these positive recommendations, which the county council and others can begin to implement.”
