Angels of Terror lift South West Roller Derby top honour for the second year running

Taunton and Exeter’s South West Angels of Terror (SWAT) came out victorious and retained the coveted title of champion roller derby team in the South West for the second year.

They were crowned champions after their latest match which saw them defeat Dorset Roller Girls (DRG) 214-97.

Over the past four month eight roller derby teams from across the South West have played against each other in a series of meetings in the SW:UK League.

Last Sunday (July 20) saw the grand final of the season, which carried the title ‘Gladiskaters’, was held at Westpoint in Exeter.

At the venue were the four leading sides from the regular season contesting the final placings to be champions, second, third and fourth.

SWAT had gone into the grand final with a season-long unbeaten record and were also defending the title they had won twelve months earlier.

A powerful first half showing saw SWAT take a 116-49 lead into the half-time interval.

After the break the SWAT blockers continued to hold sway in the match both holding back and ‘hitting’ the opposition jammers and blockers!

As ever in the sport there were thrills and spills a plenty throughout an entertaining contest, but SWAT were worthy winners at the full-time whistle.

The contest for third place was between Cornwall-based Atlantic Breakers and Bristol Harbour Harlots B team .

The Harlots began slowly and found themselves up against a solid line of harlots’ blockers.

In the second half Harlots introduced a new tempo to their game, but again found the blocking and jamming by the Cornish side too much for them and at the final whistle Atlantic Breakers were crowned the third placed side thanks to a 202-116 score line.

The latest grand final proved just what a great family day out this sport has become.

Apart from the roller derby action there were also some twenty stalls of various kinds offering everything from face painting to ‘gladiator-esque pugil stick duelling. A pop-up café was in operation, there was a photo booth and plenty more.

SWAT now look forward to hosting next years grand final which they promise will be even bigger and better and of course, where they will be battling to land the coveted top honour for the third year running.
