It’s been a busy early season period for all concerned at Sidmouth Bowls Club ladies section, writes Susie Bonnell.
Three teams travelled to Abbrook Park Bowls Club, near Kingsteignton where, despite some intermittent rain, the weather held off for long enough for them to play through to the end of the match.
Valerie Newnham, the ladies’ section captain, and captain for the day, advised that a very pleasant time was had by all, catching up with many old friends at Abbrook Park. As for the game, that was enjoyable too despite the final score of 59-39 in favour of the home side. The one winning Sidmouth rink was the one of Mary Smith, Sylvia Cook and skip Eileen Hewett. Abbrook Park visit Sidmouth in July.
The ladies’ sent three teams to play a triples match at Budleigh and, upon arrival for a 2pm start n Tuesday, 13th May. Budleigh told us, when we arrived for a 2pm start, that they had almost called off the match as there had been a tremendous hail storm at midday. As Sidmouth Ladies’ teams lost on all three rinks, perhaps we should have wished for a longer hailstorm! Budleigh Ladies were, as always, great fun and lovely to play against, making losing less painful; the sun shone and the rain held off, so at least we were lucky with the weather.
The first of the season’s league matched was played last Wednesday when the Over-50s Blue team fielded two rinks against Morchard Bishop Reds and the Over-50s Yellow team took on Honiton.
It proved to be a day that the hardy bowler has dealt with on many an occasion - blustery strong wind, short sharp showers and the welcome sunny intervals! So it was on and off with the waterproofs. That didn’t stop the Blues from banking a full six points with wins for both rinks. Captain Jill Bishop, with Jane Painter and Paddy Chew won 27-7 whilst the other rink secured their win with a gritty comeback from 15-1 down to snatch victory with a one point win at 19-18!
The Yellows had slightly less success, with one rink losing and one rink drawing. Skip Eileen Hewett and her team, Elaine Reed and Jean Green battled on to secure a 21-21 draw.
The Over-50s Yellow team then journeyed to Shaldon last Friday with two rinks to play triples. One of the teams took advantage of the beautiful day and scenery by arriving early for a pub lunch on the village green - but stuck to non-alcoholic drinks to stay sharp for their first league game this summer season!
We were made most welcome by the Shaldon ladies’ teams and we played in breezy sunshine, with all the rain clouds scudding by. It was an even result, with Shaldon winning on one rink and Sidmouth winning on the other rink. The winning Sidmouth team was skipped by Jean Green, supported by Karen Hollingdale and Anita Mason, who were one down on the penultimate shot and with a fabulous final end scoring four, ended the match with a score of 19-16.
