The final games for the Sidmouth men’s County Trophy competitions were both won by the opposition, write Marian and Maurice Watson.
In the Over-60s Dawlish won on three rinks and the fourth was drawn and in the Inter Club Budleigh were successful on all four rinks.
Despite a convincing win by the rink of K Lipscombe, Connie Tolley, Peter Bates and skip Bert Hague, the mixed friendly against Bridport was won by the visitors.
In a men’s friendly triples game against Axminster the winning margin by Ken Bridgman, Dave Lever and skip Mike Reader was sufficient to cover the lost shots on the other two rinks and Sidmouth won the match by three shots.
A ladies friendly at Exonia resulted in the home side winning two of the three rinks and also the game. Sidmouth’s successful rink was Betty Farmer, Mary Bristow, Beryl Sparkes and skip Jill Bishop.
Four ladies, Marian Watson, Sue Mison, Zena Johnson and Jill Bishop (see photo) travelled to Plymouth to play the ladies fours county semi finals. Their opponents, playing on their home rink, proved too strong and were worthy winners.
The game was interrupted by the fire alarm with everybody having to evacuate the building. Fortunately it was a false alarm but it could not have helped the players’ concentration.
The lady Devon County President brought a team to Sidmouth but was unable to beat the home side who won on two of the three rinks and the game quite convincingly.
The most successful rink was Pat Ashton Pritchard, Mary Bristow, Beryl Sparkes and skip Dreda Taylor.
