Last Sunday, Woodbury Village Hall played host to the Woodbury Short Mat Bowls Club’s Charity Fours Tournament, writes Mark Briggs.
In the clubs 23-year history, it was the first time the club have held a tournament. The event was organised by club members Janet and Arthur Cuff.
There were 48 competitors from a wide range of locations of Devon, Dorset and Somerset representing their respective clubs with each team playing 10 ends of four games each.
Refreshments were served by Woodbury Club members and, in the afternoon, a short break was called so that all those present could celebrate with Shirley and John Parnall.
The pair, representing Wonford Short Mat Bowling Club from Exeter, were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary!
Woodbury club secretary Janet presented the very surprised couple with a cake specially with decorated silver hearts and roses.
When play resumed the competition began to heat up leading to overall winners who were the Motley Crew comprising of Dave Phillips, Cath Pepper, Val Lucas and Phil Toogood.
The winners were presented with their trophies by Woodbury’s longest serving member, Pauline Clark who has been with the club for all but one of its 23 years.
The tournament proved to be a huge hit and a magnificent sum of £387 was raised for the Village Hall extensions.
