Sidmouth have strengthened their playing resources for the 2013 Francis Clark Devon League season with the signing of Scott Barlow.

SIDMOUTH have re-signed former Devon seamer Scott Barlow for next summer’s assault on the Premier Division title, writes Conrad Sutcliffe.

Last season’s champions – they snatched the crown back from North Devon – haven’t had Barlow to call on since 2009 when he took 30 wickets in the side which won the Premier title.

Since then Barlow has had two seasons playing Southern League cricket – he was Bournemouth Sports Club captain last season – sandwiched either side of the 2011 campaign as Budleigh Salterton’s player coach.

Barlow, who was the Devon League’s young player of the year in 2006, has never lost contact with Sidmouth, where his mother lives just a six-hit away from the seafront ground.

After a disappointing season with Bournemouth, Barlow has decided the time is right to move back to the Fortfield.

He said: “Bournemouth didn’t really go well last year. We started with a 20-point deduction and the committee were a bit frustrating. All of that resulted in us not having a great season, and player commitment was poor. During the winter a few of my friends left there, and I just wanted to enjoy my cricket again so decided that Sidmouth was a pretty good option for that.”

Barlow will continue to live and work in the Bournemouth area, but will travel home for games, just as he did when assisting Budleigh.

“I’m working a steady nine to five job Monday-Friday so travelling isn’t an issue,” said Barlow.

“In the Southern League half of the season comprises all-day games, so that is the whole day gone anyway.

“I’ve always kept in touch with the guys and especially Will Murray (skipper) and I see this as probably the last chance I would get to come back and play with all of them.

“The team looks strong enough and it should be a pretty good year performances-wise.”

Barlow has played for Devon and Dorset in the Minor Counties competitions, mainly as a miserly seam bowler, although he does have a Championship half-century with the bat to his name.

Old friend and captain Murray is delighted to have Barlow back on board.

“Scott is a proven bowler at Minor County level and a better bat than a lot of people realise, so he will strengthen the team in both departments,” said Murray.
