Exmouth are out of this season’s Tolchards Devon Senior Cup, a competition they won last season, on the toss of a coin after their match on Sunday with Paignton was abandoned, writes Stephen Birley.

That’s the desperate news to come out of the Maer ground and it compounds a miserable weekend that also saw Richard Baggs’s side lose top spot in the Francis Clark Devon league Premier Division.

It’s in the competition rules that if a contest is abandoned then the match must be decided by the toss of a coin. However, it is also in the rule of the competition that a tie in the round must be completed seven days before the day of the next round. This season’s competition has the date of Sunday June 29 from Round Two so, as has happened in the case of the first round tie between Bradninch and Cornwood – called off on Sunday without a ball being bowled – it will now be played on Sunday, June 22.

Another 1st Round game – Ivybridge versus Heathcoat – will be played this coming Sunday (June 15) after the Ivybridge ground was unavailable on the original date for the 1st round matches (Sunday, June 8).

It does seem a great shame that Exmouth were not given a ‘chance’ to defend their crown in an active way – particularly as there are still two free Sunday’s before the second round! Sunday’s meeting with Paignton was abandoned after just five overs had been played!

Make sure of your copy of this week’s Exmouth Journal – out on Thursday, June 12, for a match report on the defeat at home to Exmouth last Saturday.
