Local cricket followers will no doubt have seen the recent Twenty20 World Cup played in Sri Lanka and noticed a former Budleigh CC favorite in action.

Raza Hassan, who played for the Ottermouth club during the 2010 Francis Clark Devon league season was in the Pakistan team that defeated Australia in a Super Eight match and he was named Man of the Match!

Hassan sent down four overs and claimed two wickets for just 14 runs.

Budleigh Secretary Kevin Curran says: “Raza pitched up here to say with his friend Hammad Azam who was a young man we recruited as our overseas player for 2010. Raza arrived in early July and we put him up with Hammad. He was desperate to play cricket. However, we could only field one overseas player per team and so we said he could play in the second eleven. He played around ten games in the 2010, 2nd XL A Division. Sadly, before the season was over he was called up into the Pakistan squad touring England, but did not make the starting eleven in any game. Raza was a real chirpy character and a bit of a very likeable scatter brain! He celebrated his 18 birthday at my house a couple of days after his arrival in the UK. He sang throughout the summer and loved his time playing with the young lads with whom he was extremely popular, most being of his age group and many with whom apparently he still remains in touch with. Both he and Hammad were very professional and took every opportunity to train. Hammad was due to return to play for Budleigh again in 2011, but got called into the Pakistan squad and we then heard from Raza who wanted to come over but couldn’t get his visa sorted in time. Both lads were a pleasure to have with us and they also made many friends and enjoyed there time at Ottermouth. Hammad did not get selected for the current World Series but Raza did and of course was Man of the Match in that game with Australia.”

The Budleigh secretary concluded: “I wonder how many young 2nd XI A Division players across the Devon league recall taking to the same pitch as a player who, less than two years later, was the individual star of a T20 World Finals match!”

As any sportsman will tell you it hurts to lose, it also hurts to lose by one point, it hurts even more to lose by one point in the last two minutes of a game and it hurts a lot to lose when it was the best team that lost, writes Robert Baugh.
